This is a true focus on professional project management principles, supported by examples of how they are implemented from the project level through the executive program management level. I can see that through patience and hard work a significant philosophical shift toward the formal processes for program success can be achieved. From the insight gained in this advanced textbook, I am more confident that continued efforts toward this type of study and continuing education is worthwhile in the long term for me and my organization. GDPM is the best tool for planning organisational change projects. It is not suitable for technical projects. GDPM is both a philosophy and a method and exactly that is what makes it so powerfull. Apart from adressing the five pitfalls in the beginning of the book it introduces layered planning. GDPM is about planning the WHAT and making people responsible (the WHO) for results before the project starts. After that the planning of the HOW is a cascade. In an organisational change project you can't plan activity 216 at the beginning of the project. You should only plan the activities of the first 3-5 milestones. GDPM forces you to organise your communication as well and makes sure you communicate (the 2way street) and not inform (the 1way street). The nice thing is that you need only two A4 forms to plan your project which makes it not only an effective method but also an efficient one.

HOW TO SAVE A FAILING PROJECT: CHAOS TO CONTROL by Ralph R. Young et al is a competently written book with a misleading title.It should have been called HOW TO KEEP A PROJECT FROM FAILING, since it's a collection of good project management advice from a voice of experience, but it's not how to triage a project in trouble.Still, it's well-organized and well-presented and could probably replace dozens of its predecessors already lining the project management bookshelves, covering this territory before but not as well.If I were teaching basic project management, I'd certainly consider using this book in class.Planning, team-building, managing expectations, sharing a vision--it's all there, and the authors have obviously been there, done that.

I would, however, like to have found more insights, what to do when you apply this good advice and it doesn't work, when you don't "get stakeholder buy-in" or you can't get the team together for a weekly review of progress or when conflict erupts.I would like to have heard about assembling teams that aren't co-located, teams that span geography, cultures, and languages, which is now often the case.

I also wish the book included more stories.There are a few, but given that our authors seem to have considerable experience, it's too bad they didn't share more of their first-hand experience.Stories always make for better reading than one "now do this" section after another.

I was glad to see, at the end of each chapter, a list of recommended further reading on the topic, including summaries of each book or article so prospective readers will have some idea whether they wish to actually spend time on it.I was glad to see, too, a new (I think it's new) term in the Project Management lexicon:"inch stones."It's about time we stopped thinking everything must be measured in "milestones"!

If you buy only one project management book this year, you'll get your money's worth if you buy this one.It won't catapult your to new heights, but it won't disappoint you if you're looking for a comprehensive view of what it takes to manage projects well.

I teach project management to masters students and specifically project team leadership and communications - this book is written for that audience and will be very useful - I am trying it out this semester. I did a quick word search and the author makes no reference to the field of what is known as human factors engineering, which draws on organisational psychology, cognitive psychology and ergonomics. There are no Rasmussen, Hollnagel, Reason, Dekker, Weick, references in this book.But business and quality management gurus rate a frequent mention.So it must be understood that the author is using 'human factors' in a non-technical sense.This is not unlike a 1990 title of the same name by Paul Dinsmore, who also uses 'human factors' in project management to refer to team leadership and communication skills from a soft systems like perspective more than a technical human factors approach.This all makes for Wong's book being a useful and practical addition to this genre - just don't expect any discussion of accidents, barriers, coupling, latent factors, failure modes,or situational awareness. Which is where the irony creeps in, because Wong does look at these topics from a lay perspective in an applied rather than investigative context.

This book is the best I've come across for the occasional project manager.It also contains techniques that even a seasoned project manager will find useful.
For the occasional project manager the authors provide a straightforward and [in my opinion] foolproof approach to planning and managing projects.What I like is the emphasis is on taking the time to properly plan the project, and focus on what is going to be delivered and the quality of the deliverables.While deliverable-based project management is one way to assure a properly planned and managed project too many PMs only discover this basic fact after many projects and not a few disasters.This book brings this technique to the occasional PM and explains it in a manner that makes sense.Deliverable quality is addressed by showing the PM how to develop customer acceptance criteria.This ensures that the stakeholders are getting what they require in a form that can be measured.For anyone who has developed a solution using sketchy requirements only to have the solution rejected, the customer acceptance criteria alone makes this book worthwhile.
For the advanced project manager the method outlined is missing some critical elements, such as earned value project management and a coherent discussion of developing a work breakdown structure.However, these oversights can be overcome by purchasing a book such as Visualizing Project Management, which covers these basics. What is not found in any other project management book I've read (and there are dozens) is the integrated use of common analysis and decision techniques that is the topic of Chapter 11.The approach is based on identification, organization, analysis and selection (choices). These are achieved through affinity diagramming (identification and organization), interrelationship diagraph (analysis and choice), a decision matrix (analysis and choice) and multivoting (analysis and choice).The end result is a thorough analysis and consensus among all project stakeholders for deliverables, acceptance criteria and other aspects of the project.These tools are extended in Appendix D, which briefly, but succinctly, describes the Martin Tate Problem Solving Methodology.
Occasional and advanced project managers alike will benefit from the detailed instructions for managing project changes, the many checklists and tables throughout the book (augmented by well designed illustrations), and the way the authors blend hard project management techniques with people skills.
If you find yourself tasked with managing relatively simple projects this should be the first book to which you turn.If you are a seasoned professional who wants to add some effective skills to your bag of tricks this book will prove to be a wise investment.

I've read the book from cover to cover and it's a excellent pragmatic book that explains how to manage both small and large programs.I can easily see myself using this as a reference for many years to come especially when I find myself trying to figure out how to handle one of the many of situations the author describes in his book.

The chapter on attributes of an effective Program Manager was really helpful to me as I was in the process of assigning one of my staff as a Program Manager.When I read the simple to understand attributes it really helped me to focus in on who on my staff could do the role.Additionally, it was an excellent guide for my selected Program Managerto use to understand what my expectations of him was.

The chapter that covered stakeholder management was another excellent chapter that I have sense asked all of my Program AND Project managers to read.I did this because it's an excellent chapter on helping the Program and Project Managers to understand what stakeholders REALLY expect of them.Additionally he goes over the types of stakeholders that you can run into and simple yet effective methods to work effective with them.For example he talks about the meddling stakeholder which all Program and Project managers run into.Here he guides you though why they might be meddling, such as they recently got burned by a prior project or there is a distrust with the organization.In these situations he recommends on involving them through many tasks and details.They want to meddle great jump in the mud, roll up your sleeves and help, otherwise step back and let those truly involved in the project get the work done while properly informing all stakeholders.
Over all this book is a really good and easy read.

I expect to be referencing for many years to come!
