As the Director of a Project Management Office, this book is the definitive manual.It contains the latest and greatest problems, issues, and known bugs.It saves time and it is a great training tool.At 900 pages it takes a while to read, but the layout is great so you can find answers to specific problems quickly.I recommend this book to anyone that has anything to do with the administration of Project Server 2007.

As someone new to MS Project Server, I am expecting a book which can teach me step by step with screenshots and descriptions matching. This book is not. It seems the author knows where to go, but not enough screenshots to support his words. He did not specificly say in the writing which screen he is talking about. As a reader I have to guess if it is this view, or that view. Also the authors did not provide emails or a website where further help will be provided, so the readers have no way to ask questions to clarify things talked in the book. I am in the middle of reading the book and hoping I don't have to buy another Project Server book after I am done. The title of the book says "the complete reference", I doubt it does what it says.

I am very pleased to have discovered this book.
I am a project management consultant with the PMI PMP certification and Microsoft's MCITP certification in enterprise project management using Microsoft Office Project Server 2007.This book bridges the two universes of Project Server 2007 (the tool) and the best practices and processes of PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PBMOK).The book is well written and straight forward.I was able to follow and complete all of the example scenarios with ease.The book shows how to actually implement each of the PMBOK processes, create the project plan documents, and construct the project document libraries. From project initiation through planning, execution, monitoring and control and project closeout --- it's all there.The neat part is that you are actually doing it in the project server environment.I knew very little about creating SharePoint lists, views, libraries, links, etc., but I was able to do it all with ease.
This book is a "keeper".I've added it to my personal project management toolkit.

When I saw the title of the book, and the fact that it was from O'Reilly, I picked it up the day it came out.I had high hopes that I would learn some excellent tips on managing projects in SharePoint.To be fair to the author, the book does exactly what the title says... it shows you how to create a Project Management Information Systems site with SharePoint.Maybe my expectations were too high as to what I would learn.

Unfortunately, I don't think I learned anything new from the entire book.The book basically walks you through creating a project management site on sharepoint, tracking risks, assigning tasks, adding a calendar, etc.You could save the effort and just download the free Project Tracking Workspace template directly from Microsoft: [...]
If you are not experienced with SharePoint, then this is probably just fine for teaching you how to create a site, add web parts, and integrate with Office.If you already know what web parts are and how to synchronize with Outlook, then this is not the book for you.
