The PMBOK guide is organized by knowledge areas, and this text presents the material by process groups.Looking at the project management processes from both perspectives was very helpful.The practice exam questions on the CD are close to what I saw on the actual exam, which I passed on my initial try.I also downloaded the audio recaps of each chapter to my iPod so I could listen while commuting.A couple of minor errors/typos, but overall I would recommend this book.

Effective Work Breakdown Structures (The Project Management Essential Ibrary Series) Review

Effective Work Breakdown Structures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of the three books that focus solely on work breakdown structures this is the most complete. The other two are "Nuts and Bolts Series 1--How to Build a Work Breakdown Structure" by Carl L. Pritchard, and "Project Management Institute Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures".The burning question is how do they compare and which is best.For a no-nonsense and pragmatic book the "Nuts and Bolts Series" book wins. It has the distinction of being the first book on the subject, and is one that I used as a reference for the past 4 years.If you are planning to certify as a PMP, your best bet is the PMI Practice Standard, because you're sure to encounter exam questions that are based on that book.However, if you want a comprehensive book that covers every facet of principles and practice, this is the book to get.
What sets this one apart from the other two (all other factors being equal) is the clearer descriptions of the principles, and the checklists.I also like the way that the author goes deeper into details about how to align the WBS to various project types (product-, service- and results-oriented projects), and the more complete life cycle view that this book provides.As an aside, a results-oriented project, previously mentioned, is a project such as organizational change management, which doesn't produce a tangible deliverable in the same manner as, for example, a software development project does.
To put into context the comparison among the three books, I favor this one because of personal preferences.Each merits, in my opinion, equal value, and any of the three will give you the knowledge necessary to develop a work breakdown structure.

PMP Exam Quicklet: Project Management Professional Practice Exams

I received this book only a couple of days before my PMP exam, and I'm happy I did. It helped me a great deal in passing the exam. I won't say the questions are easy or difficult, wordy or non-wordy. But I will say this: they are realistic, very realistic. Let me put it this way. When I was taking the exam, most of the questions were ringing bells. Some of those bells connected to my study guide, most of them connected to the questions in this book, and a very few connected to a very expensive software simulation CD that I bought. For me it's too late, but you can save hundreds of dollars by using this book along with your study guide. This is not to say that the exam is easy; it is tough...but this book helped...The exam tips in the Introduction of the book changed my attitude toward the exam and the exam preparation; that helped. The questions also exposed the weak spots in my preparation..so I went back to the study guide and improved my understanding...I skimmed through the Quick Exam Prep section just before the exam...that helped to knock down a few questions in the exam right away...
I recommend this book to each PMP exam taker, highly.

The Strategic Project Leader: Mastering Service-Based Project Leadership (Center for Business Practices) Review

The Strategic Project Leader: Mastering Service-Based Project Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In section two of his book, Mr. Ferraro writes:

"In project management, leadership is desperately needed; leadership that is adaptable, perceptive, timely, meaningful, authentic, and unselfish."

This one sentence sums up the core of The Strategic Project Leader's message: Project leaders, not project processes, are the future for project management. As the first section carefully lays out, the codification and standardization of project management knowledge has created a commoditized service that can be bought and sold like any other product. However, project managers can resist the force of commoditization by adding personal value to their organizations through leadership.

Ferraro defines a new role for the project manager seeking to be the spearhead of change - the service-based project leader. As the book points out, this role of 'Project Leader' is an area of untapped potential in project management. This kind of leadership requires a project manager to provide service not only to a sponsor but to all the project's stakeholders. By truly serving the needs of organizations and individuals, project leaders find themselves doing meaningful work, a factor that is linked to personal growth and great job satisfaction. Due to the highly personal and individual nature of leadership, it cannot be codified and standardized into a 'methodology.'

The first section of the book is devoted to this idea of leadership in project management and provides guidance as to how to step up into a leadership role. However, Ferraro also introduces several critical topics not usually found in project management books. He discusses the importance of establishing trust-based relationships with clients, and putting the needs of the client first, ideas that are central to high-level project leadership.

The second section of the book provides more concrete information in the form of a `leadership competency framework' that is comprised of five `core competencies'. This competency framework is presented in the form of a pyramid:

* Project & Program Management Knowledge, Skill & Experience
* Subject Matter Expertise
* Trust-based Relationships
* Consultative Leadership
* Courage

While knowledge of project management processes is necessary as the base of this pyramid, project leaders must move beyond this to become true consultative leaders.

The third section helps the reader create practical self-development plans - a step-by-step guide to improving leadership skills. The final section, written by Roberta Hill, provides a detailed overview of a variety of assessment methods.

Smoothly written and easy to read, The Strategic Project Leader is an indispensable guide to anyone looking to be a leader among project managers.

Peter Taylor was able to put together many practical and valuable project management lessons learned in a very funny and easy manner. He walked the talk by providing readers with a 2 page summary of the core content of the book, what makes the "lazy community" happy.

If you do not consider yourself lazy, you are going to understand the benefits of "productive laziness"; if you are already a "lazy project manager" the book will make you feel better (you are not alone! :o) and on top of that will give you many interesting lessons learned, without too much effort.
I do recommend the reading!

I picked this up as I was in the middle of several complex Project plans for network upgrades and migrations, as well as a mass rollout of Office 2003.I'd used previous versions of Project before but never really learned how to use it.
By the time I finished the first 10 chapters, I had already tripled my Project knowledge...and the really cool stuff was yet to come.Project, like Visio, is an extremely complex application that most people never crack the surface as far as usability goes.Anyone who is doing heavy Project Management needs to use Project, this is the book to learn by.

Bare Bones Project Management: What you can't not do
Average Reviews:

With many larger books, if you want to take away anything at all, you need to make a set of notes because the gems of the book are scattered across so many pages.Well this book comes as condensed notes - it's 52 pages not counting the introduction.If that's not condensed enough, there are brief summaries at the end of each of the seven chapters.

As the author mentions, this book is not for project managers leading major projects.This book is geared for people who need to do project management as part of their job, so they can get back to the rest of their job.It goes on to discuss the minimum one needs to do to increase the likelihood of success for the project.It includes areas from planning and managing the project to politics and staffing.

For those not familiar with the author, Bob Lewis is one of the most colorful technology writers around.His style is that of a casual conversation, with plenty of humor thrown in for good measure.As an example of the humor, from a couple of footnotes:
"Best" is defined as "makes the situation most convenient for the project manager."
"Worst" is defined as what always happens unless you take active steps to avoid it.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone involved with IT projects who cares to see them succeed.

This is easily the worst textbook I have used in my entire college career. Its language is convoluted and extremely confusing, and its descriptions are poor at best. Thank goodness I had an excellent professor to help me delve through this monstrosity.

I work as a consultant for ERP system implementations. This book explains how many problems are inherent to Project Management, and what to do in many cases.
For example: Jolyon will explain how to set up estimates, and then ask questions like 'What if the customer thinks your estimates are too low?' and propose a course of action. The book also contains many useful check lists. In this book I found the most detailed explanation on how to set up a Project Schedule (WBS, dependencies, et cetera), Project Budget, and follow up I have read.
I highly recommend this book.

Product Description:
It's common in the IT industry to hear of project disasters: overdue products, blown budget estimates, and dismal results. And the root cause of most of these commonplace disasters is the simple fact that people skilled in the technical aspects of a project are often not prepared to manage them.
Managing projects requires expert skill in managing budgets, people, and processes. It requires someone who is proficient in project management -- especially in the highly complex, project-driven IT industry. Information Systems Project Management gives you the powerful tips and tools you need to deliver results.
A definitive resource for IT professionals, the second edition of Information Systems Project Management uses clear language and real-world examples to guide you through each key step of understanding the project, defining it, planning it, and running it -- and bringing it to completion. And the book shows you how to steer clear of pitfalls that can quickly derail your project, including scope changes that are not adequately defined, tracked, and managed; poor planning, especially planning that overlooks project activities; and an overabundance of technology tools, which often results in decreased productivity.
Plus, the second edition comes complete with all-new sections on how to: * manage projects when you're also a team participant * define the proper objective * get your projects off to a good start * understand a variety of system-development life cycles * plan for a smooth project implementation * and complete a project cleanly, from capturing lessons learned to administrative closeout. The book is also packed with new checklists, worksheets, and action plans for dozens of "what-if" scenarios.
Whether your project entails implementing major packages, upgrading hardware, designing a technology architecture, or developing a systems strategic plan, Information Systems Project Managementhelps you successfully deliver your projects on time, on budget, and with desired results.

I found this book the best and time saving companion to the PMBOK Guide for passing the CAPM exam. Well, you have to read the PMBOK Guide, so I did too. But this is the book that made me pass the exam. it made the difference between fail and pass. Looking back, the questions in the book are very realistic and very similar to the actual questions in the exam. The detailed answers to each question helped me to fill some gaps in my understanding. Just the right number of questions that you need to practice for the exam: three practice exams. Very useful bonus: the book contains three more features: Exam Tips, PMBOK Chapter Reviews, and Exam Quick Prep. Read the Exam Tips in the Introduction of the book before reading the PMBOK Guide because these exam tips help develop the right way of going through the material by explaining what kind of questions to expect. Exam Tips also help you to develop a technique to sort the right answer from the multiple choices.
The Quicklet (this book) reviews each chapter of the PMBOK Guide in a very concise and elegant way. After reading each chapter in the PMBOK Guide, I read its review in the Quicklet. Put everything in perspective and the chapter in the PMBOK Guide made much more sense. Each review includes the Big Picture which shows the relationships among the main processes in the chapter in an easy to understand way. This helped to make the material stick for the exam.
I quickly went through the Exam Quick Prep just before the exam. I'm sure it helped to score some extra points.
Already know some project management? Then you just need this book with the PMBOK Guide to a pass the CAPM exam. If you are a beginner, you can add a Study Guide to this mix. That's all, you don't need to spend a fortune.

Dr. Kerzner made an excellent synthesis of project management from a practical point of view.
Pure experience sorted and regrouped alongside topics of excellence. The book is rich of diagrammes, graphics,
screen copies and all sort of illustrations which helped thousands of project actors to grasp and retain the notions.

I appreciated the European touch as well.

If you manage projects, this book is a must.
If you manage projects for over 10 years, take it with you even during your holidays.

Regardless of whether you are a PMI certified Project Management Professional (PMP), or a PRINCE2 Practitioner, or hold any other project management certification, this book will improve your skills.
It does not replace knowledge or process areas on any of the existing project management approaches, but, instead, shows you how to tailor an approach that best fits project objectives.In many ways the approach in this book is more similar to the UK PRINCE2 standard because of the emphasis on project organization and stakeholders.
For readers who hold the PMP certification this book's distinction between methodologies and frameworks, and how to select and implement the most effective methodology will add coherency to the PMBOK framework upon which the certification is based.The author's approach does not supplant or alter the PMBOK process areas.It indirectly shows how much each process area should be given during the life of the project.It also fills in gaps in the PMBOK approach with respect to project organization.This material can also be effectively used in a PMO.
The project templates and techniques are invaluable tools for any project manager.I have one issue with the book:the URL given for the downloadable templates is a dead link.However, I believe this is one of the most important books published in recent years, and it is most useful for experienced project managers who can appreciate the in-depth information the author imparts.

-Bob Fairchild, Senior Project Manager
"Mr. Charvat is the Norm Abram of project management. He not only has a rich collection of tools but also the down-to-earth advice on how best to use them. His observation that not all tools are appropriate for all projects is again in line with the master carpenter analogy. Like the carpenter, the project manager must be skilled in knowing which tools are right for the job at hand."
-Thomas P. Davis, IT mentor and coach
